Many companies fall into this trap, assuming software development is a simple commodity. We built the PoC and delivered it working. Every competing agency that had initially claimed it was possible failed to.

While a PoC may have a small cost, it is an invaluable investment. It is far better to spend a small amount upfront to validate a team’s capabilities than to risk the entire project budget. If possible, have a trusted technical advisor review the PoC’s code to ensure it meets quality standards.

💡 5. Look for partners with relevant industry experience.

A partner who understands your industry—whether it’s manufacturing, professional services, or another specialized field—will grasp the nuances of your challenges and propose more effective solutions. Don’t be discouraged by Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). They often indicate that a firm is trusted with sensitive, mission-critical projects. A partner with true industry depth can discuss relevant challenges and solutions insightfully, even without revealing specific client details.

Traditional software contracts often create a conflict of interest. In a fixed-price model, the agency profits by doing the minimum required, and any change can be costly. In a time-and-materials model, there is little incentive to work efficiently.

Look for a partner whose success is aligned with yours. They should be focused on delivering business value and be flexible enough to adapt as requirements become clearer.
